Cool Links

This page is for cool links. Only the coolest links will go here. Updated as cool links are brought to the handsome fat man’s attention.

WRITING/STORYTELLING (including pitching)

Carlos Alexandre’s Online Portfolio — My professional writing portfolio, for day jobs and whatnot. I got samples ‘n’ qualifications ‘n’ junk; check it out if you need a professional writer (tech writing, review/article writing, editing, etc.) for anything.

johnaugust.com — Screenwriter John August answers questions about the craft, dispels myths, and provides a knowledge-filled repository of excellent screenwriting know-how, all without asking you for a dime. Highly recommended for any screenwriter, aspiring or otherwise.

No Bullscript Consulting — Danny Manus’s motto is “Hate me today, love me in your acceptance speech.” He’s chock full of rational, reasonable advice on pitching and selling your script. I’ve pitched to him and listened to his lectures in person, and I can attest to his insightful, um, insight.

GAMING (including game journalism and design)

Sirlin.net — David Sirlin’s website holds many treasures for the inquisitive gamer: Sirlin’s blog, filled with thoughtful musings on gaming and a host of other topics; the Sirlin Games site, where you can peruse and purchase his great games; the Street Fighter HD Remix design notes; and the online version of his book, Playing to Win.

Ike’s Gaming Blog — Isaac Calon’s blog about gaming, game design, the benefits of gaming as a storytelling medium, and all things “game.” He’s currently enrolled in Vancouver Film School’s game design program, aiming to turn his hobby and passion into his career. He’s insightful, opinionated, and fun: check him out.

Grahf Games — Grahf describes himself as “the dude playing the dude that’s disguised as another dude that happens to blog about video games.” He’s tactful and thoughtful, presenting an intelligent viewpoint about current gaming isms, from the current state of game reviews to microtransactions and their impact, and everything in between. Worthwhile.

NEWS AND POLITICS (including social commentary)

Raising Nations: A Canadian’s Perspective — Erin Dixon’s blog, chronicling his observations of and perspective into Canada’s foreign aid missions. He aims to use his skills and training to bring to light the world’s problems and the efforts made to alleviate them.

James Randi Educational Foundation (JREF) — The JREF promotes skepticism and critical thinking, qualities all too often missing from society in general. Educational, funny, and quite possibly the most important place anyone on the fence about skepticism should visit. Go. Learn. Be enlightened. Expand your mind. Embrace reason.

OTHER STUFF (including other stuff)

That Guy With The Glasses — Doug Walker, better known as the Nostalgia Critic, hosts a bunch of funny film/game/whatever reviewers and commentators. Be warned though; once you start watching his reviews, you’re likely to waste a lot of time, lost in enjoyment.

Majere’s Links o’ Plenty — Majere, also known as the mysterious Hack Man, maintains a bunch of links. They’re mostly for his personal use but maybe you’ll find enough stuff you also like to make it your personal internet launching point.

StickPage — Do you like watching Flash videos of stick figures fighting, or playing Flash games featuring exactly that? Go here and be merry.
